5 Ways to Stop a Shaving Cut from Bleeding – hey, we’ve all been there.
If you shave with a safety razor – even if you’ve done your homework and are doing it with the right technique – chances are that, eventually, you are going to cut yourself shaving.
Maybe you slip. Maybe you have a pimple. Maybe you’re just a little too heavy-handed with that brand new blade. Hey, no shame. It happens to the best of us.
However, if you do happen to cut yourself shaving, you’re going to have to do a little triage. Below are five methods for getting a shaving cut to stop bleeding.
(N.B. All of the methods below work, so we’ll skip listing the “pros” of each method. However, each way has it’s own drawbacks, so we’ll mention those.)
Toilet paper.
That old standby. Come on, we’ve all used this method. And if you haven’t, you’re not a real man! Just kidding. It’s almost magic how it works.
Cons: You’ll look ridiculous if you walk out of the house and forget you’ve used it; cut will often start bleeding again when you take off the paper.
One of the first post-toilet paper methods I tried. It’s very effective and easy to travel with, as most versions come in a small plastic tube.
Cons: Leaves a white residue that needs to be rinsed off – can’t just use it and run out of the house; breaks apart easily after a period of use; not very cleanly since you have to rinse your blood off after every use.
After becoming upset with the styptic pen’s white residue, it felt like I discovered the holy grail of shaving cut stoppers when I discovered Nick Relief. I works great and does not leave a white residue, but…
Cons: Leaves a brown residue that must be washed off after application; can stain clothing if you forget to wash it off.
This is my favorite method. Doesn’t sting. Doesn’t leave a residue. Works quickly.
Cons: Tastes like crap (if you happen to get a cut near the corner of your mouth you will taste it).
Similar to liquid styptic; available in many different scents, which could be nice.
Cons: Stings.
