The three basic steps for your daily skincare routine
When it comes to a good skincare routine, there are three steps that are non-negotiable for achieving healthier skin. This bare minimum regimen includes cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting from sun exposure.
Although there are many other products that can be added to address your specific skin concerns and advance you in the quest for healthier and more attractive skin, these are the basic necessities. Whether you are a skincare newbie or have been trying to attain better skin for years, it is important to have these fundamental steps down.
Step 1: Cleansing
You should wash your face twice at day – once in the morning and again before going to bed. Cleansing removes the dirt, sweat, pollutants and bacteria that have been accumulating on your skin, either throughout the day or while sleeping.

Bonus Tip: Facial wipes are an easy and convenient way to cleanse when you are on-the-go, after you work out if you don’t have time to shower right away, or after a long night out when you can’t quite muster up the energy to go to the sink. I keep a bag next in my gym bag and next to my bed.
Step 2: Moisturizing
Every time after cleansing or exfoliating, it is necessary to rehydrate your skin, as your natural skin oils have just been removed. A good moisturizer hydrates and helps rebuild your skin’s natural protective layer without feeling greasy or heavy.

Bonus Tip: If you want to streamline your morning routine, you can use a face moisturizer that also contains SPF. However, you will need to have nighttime moisturizer that doesn’t have SPF.
Step 3: Sun Protecting
Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun is the number one factor for skin damage and premature aging. The UV rays penetrate skin and cause free radical to form inside of cells. These free radicals then go on to damage cells so they don’t function properly and can even lead to skin cancer. SPF should be used every morning, even when it is cloudy as UV rays can penetrate through clouds.

Going shopping for skincare products can be overwhelming, to say the least. There are tons of products all with a variety of ingredients that claim to cure your skin problems. However being the scientific guy I am, I believe that before trying to add a new product into your routine, it is important to control as many other variables as possible.
For me, that means using non-irritating and fragrance-free products that are effective at doing their job but gentle on the skin. Using products like this allows you to better see the root issues your skin may have and how to best treat them going forward.
