One way to dress down a grey suit for the season
Grey and burgundy is one of my favorite menswear color combinations. It’s simple, it’s classic and especially around this time of the year, it’s very appropriate. Burgundy accents add an element of richness and warmth to a look and today I’m showing you one way to dress down your grey suit with some luxe, seasonal touches.

Remember that wearing a suit does not mean you have to wear a tie. In fact, ditching the tie is a simple way to dress down a suit. That’s where choosing the right collar style comes in. A shirt collar should stand up underneath the jacket and a button down collar not only helps that but it also contributes to the overall casual, sans tie vibe.
When you’re accenting a solid suit with a color – in this case, burgundy – make sure those accents have a little pattern. De Niro did the solid on solid on solid thing in Casino, but it’s not the 90s anymore and these days that kind of pairing just looks amateur. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns either (here’s a quick guide). A burgundy bengal stripe shirt pairs effortlessly with a burgundy silk scarf with a timeless dot pattern.
Burgundy tassel loafers are a must. For a dressed down grey suit look, there’s no better footwear. I’ve been getting a lot of wear out of this pair from our friends at Johnston & Murphy. I’ve always been impressed with the comfort of a J&M shoe right out of the box and these are no exception. And the fact that they’re Goodyear welted only means they’re going feel better on my feet the more I wear them.
Thanks, as always, for reading and Happy New Year!
Stylishly Yours,
Brian Sacawa
