from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Over the years, I’ve gotten to know my fair share of bartenders. However, none have been quite as interesting, engaging and passionate about quality when it comes to mixing drinks than my friend Andre Levon Barnhill.

I first met Dre when he was the bar manager at a James Beard award-winning restaurant, which happened to be right across the street from my apartment – lucky me, right? – and was immediately impressed with the craftsmanship and intricacies of his original recipes.

His cocktails have a signature style that make them immediately recognizable as a “Dre drink,” which is something I think all makers, regardless of their medium, aspire to develop.

Beyond Dre’s mixing ability, I wanted to profile him in partnership with Absolut Crafted with Love, is because his former restaurant was all locally-sourced. Like ultra local, high-quality ingredients.

And one of the things I was really interested to learn was that Absolut sources all of their ingredients locally – within 75 miles of their distillery – which is a key to the overall quality of the product.

Here’s Dre in conversation and in his own words.

“My path to mixing cocktails and creating original recipes actually began with my first liquid love and obsession: wine. It was really my first go at sensory analysis. Later, when I was living in Washington, DC I started to find beer fascinating and became the assistant beer director for a huge Belgian beer bar. It wasn’t until around 2011 that I really started focusing on cocktails and, since then, it’s been something of a love affair for me.

In my experience, there are three key elements that go into making a quality cocktail: the best ingredients, the right tools and the perfect ambience. These three things need to come together to create the full experience.

A lot of the inspiration for my drinks comes from reading history, particularly about the industrial revolution, barons and renowned inventors. I like to imagine settings, where people are relaxed, in many different cultures and time periods. Sometimes drinks are approaches based around the edges of existing drinks and sometimes they’re more imaginative and based off of the obsessions of particular historical figures.

Andre Levon Barnhill Mixologist - He Spoke Style

For example, I like to imagine how Pierpont Morgan’s cigar obsession would inform his drink decisions; or what insane, intoxicating, smoking molecular expression of a cocktail I would make for Nikola Tesla. Putting myself into that kind of head space really helps me creatively.

Vodka is one of the most challenging ingredients to work with. It’s like working with a blank canvas, all the while, you’re trying to make it interesting. That also makes it an ingredient that can be fairly boundless. And when you’re talking about a quality product like Absolut vodka, that is most certainly the case.

My personality really comes through in the drinks I create. I love cozying up to people and sharing a little warmth. I love to jive and prefer, generally speaking, to be rocking and rolling. I love banging on all cylinders. Trying to create an experience for people – front to back and top to bottom – means finding drinks for everyone. Those drinks are informed by my loves and the things that personally challenge me.

Andre Levon Barnhill Mixologist - He Spoke Style

Over the past five years or so, there’s been a revival of interest in classic and craft cocktails and our culture definitely plays a role in that. I see people searching for quality in all aspects of their lives. That doesn’t mean that I’m going to try to ask my local sports bar to make me a proper absinthe drip. It does, however, mean that I know I can go many more places and get delicious cocktails along with everything else excellent that is being offered.”

Billy Reid Suede Jacket - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Early fall is the perfect time for a lightweight suede jacket. That is, when it’s not raining cats and dogs like it has been on the East Coast recently.

There is nothing quite like the look and feel of a quality suede. The soft napped texture lends any outfit a great deal of depth, warmth and richness.

Billy Reid Suede Jacket - He Spoke Style

Just like a leather jacket, the best suede jackets have simple designs. Avoid excess pockets, zippers, or fringe. Simple is always in style, ensures maximum versatility and helps keep you from becoming a fashion victim.

The best pieces in my wardrobe often have a good story attached to them. I first saw this jacket at Billy Reid in the West Village. It was at the tail end of summer, and believe it or not, this was in the summer collection. It was on sale and there were only two left in my size anywhere. I let it go, as it was a little out of my price range.

A couple weeks later, I stopped back in expecting it to be long gone. But, there it was. I still balked a bit but left my number with the shopkeeper in case it dropped in price any more. The very next day, she called and let me know that it had been reduced significantly. Done. It was meant to be.

A suede jacket is also a great way to dress up denim and elevate a casual look. Same goes for a waistcoat and a proper pair of chelsea boots.

Burberry Scarf Bar - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Before I knew anything about fashion or style, I was able to recognize and identify one of the most iconic color schemes and patterns: the classic Burberry check. The people I’d see wearing it always looked so elegant and confident.

Of the garments adorned by that check, none are perhaps more famous than the Burberry scarf. The classic version is 100% cashmere, woven on traditional looms in the Scottish towns of Elgin and Ayr and finished by hand using methods that have been passed down for generations.

If you have an icon, you don’t mess with it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t build on its quality and success. Burberry is doing just that with the launch of the Burberry Scarf Bar. For the first time, we’ll all have access to an expanded range of classic and lightweight cashmere designs, prints and monogramming options, as well as 30 colors.

If one thing is certain, it’s that a Burberry scarf is timeless. Definitely check out the Burberry Scarf Bar online or in store and should you consider investing in one for yourself, here are five different looks for a little inspiration.

1. All Business

Classics never go out of style. Grey suit. Check. Crisp white shirt and simple tie. Check. Burberry trench and signature plaid scarf. Check.

2. Indian Summer

There’s always a day in late October that’s chilly in the morning, but overly warm in the afternoon. On a day like this, ditch the coat and throw on a light cashmere scarf to keep warm.

3. Edgy Workwear

How To Shave with a Safety Razor - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

A very good alternate title for this post would be: How do I shave with a safety razor without cutting myself?

The name ‘safety razor‘ is actually pretty oxymoronic. When do you ever see the words ‘safe’ and ‘razor’ used together? Only in this instance. And what happens is that it lulls you into this false sense of security about how easy it will be to shave with one.

For those who remember their first attempt at shaving with a safety razor, it’s probably a bit of a gruesome tale. I definitely went through a bunch of styptic that first time.

However, I think our contributing whiskey/cigar editor, Chris, takes the cake for worst first-go with a safety razor. I clearly remember the photo he texted me. Looked like he’d been mauled by a bear. I don’t think he shaves with one anymore.

Now, there’s no guarantee that your first try with a safety razor will go off without a hitch (or nick), but if you follow these tips, you will drastically increase those odds.

How to shave with a safety razor

1. Prepare your skin properly. Wash, exfoliate and use a good shaving cream or soap. Best to shave right after getting out of the shower, but a hot washcloth on the beard area for a minute or two will do the trick as well.

2. Always use a fresh blade. Now, this may sound like a recipe for cutting yourself but…

3. Let the blade do the work; don’t use excess pressure. This is where 100% of people screw up. Multiblade cartridges have conditioned us to being okay with pushing the blades against our faces. A gentle touch is all you need for the blade to lift and slice the hair.

4. Use short strokes. Forget what you’ve seen in shaving commercials with dudes taking those long, jaw-length strokes with their razors. It’s not the proper way, plus it greatly increases your chances of nicking yourself.

5. Go with the grain. You should already know which direction your beard hair grows – make sure you’re shaving with the grain on the first pass. Note that it may grow in different directions on different parts your face.

6. Re-lather and go against the grain. If you want. I generally forego the second pass, especially when I’ve got to shave a few days in a row. One pass with a fresh blade gets my shave plenty close.

7. Rinse your face with cold water. Use a little styptic, if needed. (I like this liquid version.) And apply an afershave balm.

Have any safety razor shaving tips (or horror stories)? Chime in!

Brian Sacawa

Ted Baker Quilted Jacket - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

I love fall looks built around textures. Like I said about suede, there’s no better way to add visual interest, depth and warmth to a look. Here are a few ways I’m working texture into my style this fall/winter.

Ted Baker Quilted Jacket - He Spoke Style

Maybe it’s because my mother is an accomplished quilter, but I am a big fan of quilting, especially on jackets. A quilted jacket has a bit of rugged elegance and is versatile enough to be dressed up for work during the week or dressed down with denim for a casual weekend.

The zipped panel on the inside of the jacket was a trend I spotted in a lot of boutiques in Milan last fall. It’s great for adding a little extra warmth when you need it and also adds more depth via the illusion of an extra layer.

You know I love a good turtleneck and subtlety. It’s hard to spot in these photos, but the turtleneck I’m wearing – like most turtlenecks – has a subtle ribbing around the neck.

Fall is all about the weekend getaway. A small leather duffle fits everything I need (check out that embossing!). And don’t forget that the weather can be very unpredictable. I always bring a sturdy umbrella along just in case.

3 Cocktails to Make for Fall

Absolut Spice Mule Cocktail - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

As part of our partnership with Absolut Crafted with Love, I asked my friend, master mixologist, Andre Levon Barnhill, to create three original cocktail recipes using Absolut vodka – a legend in the industry and a spirit of the highest quality.

Check out the first part of the series, a conversation with Dre about the craft of making cocktails, right here.

Here are Dre’s three original recipes along with his commentary on each drink. As you’ll see, each drink relies on a homemade syrup. These are easy to make and go a long way to enhancing the quality of each individual cocktail.

The Serpent and the Sun

The Serpent and the Sun Cocktail - He Spoke Style

The Serpent and the Sun was my ode to the last bit of warm weather we were having here on the East Coast. It’s a floral riff on a sour that is meant to be intense, refreshing and reminiscent of that odd time as the summer ends and autumn begins. I’ve always loved the symbolism and worship of the sun by people throughout history as a creative and divine life-giving force. The clove chamomile syrup is an ingredient to make at home and makes a big impact on the quality and craft aspect of the cocktail.

1 oz. Absolut Vodka
.75 oz. St. Germaine
.75 oz. Lemon Juice
.5 oz. Montenegro Amaro
.5 oz. Clove Chamomile Syrup (2:1)
1 Egg White
Angostura Bitters

Combine the vodka, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, amaro, clove/chamomile syrup and egg white in a mixing glass. Dry shake to emulsify the egg. Add ice and shake again. Strain into a chilled coupe and add a few dashes of bitters on the foam.

The Leaflet

The Leaflet - Absolut Quality Makers - He Spoke Style

This drink is playful and simple. When I got the idea for this bright green, full and opaque drink, I was plenty stoked to make it a reality. The drink itself is an awesome combination of two things: tropical fruit and smoke. It makes me feel like I’m at an island barbeque. Like the clove camomile syrup in The Serpent and the Sun, how the kiwi syrup plays with the vodka and mezcal takes the quality of the drink over the top.

1 oz. Alipus St. Ana Mezcal
.75 oz. Absolut Vodka
3 oz. Kiwi Syrup
.75 oz. Lime Juice
2 dashes Orange Bitters

Combine the mezcal, vodka, kiwi syrup, lime juice and bitters in a mixing glass. Shake with ice and strain into a double old fashioned glass over ice cubes. Garnish with a lime twist.

Spice Mule

Absolut Spice Mule Cocktail - He Spoke Style

I feel like everyone has some version of a Moscow Mule and, sure, everyone should have a crack at their own version of maybe the most popular classic in contemporary drink culture. I wanted it to emphasize all the refreshing, sort of breathe-a-cold-deep-breathe-type feelings that a Moscow Mule and ginger, in general, can provide.

I didn’t want to add mint or eucalyptus, so I thought seasonally – as per usual, context is key. We’re hitting a time and season where baking spices and huge – and that deep, aromatic scent was in my mind. Cardamom provides that passage-clearing sort of inhale.

The drink isn’t that different than a lot of mules. However, the ginger cardamon syrup adds a pop of intensity and ribbons of lime on the nose nicely meld the bouquet and, once again, elevates the profile of an already quality cocktail.

1.75 oz. Absolut Vodka
1 oz. Ginger Cardamom Syrup (1:1)
.5 oz. Lime Juice
Fever-Tree Ginger Beer
Lime Peel & Zest

Combine the vodka, ginger cardamom syrup and lime juice in a mixing glass. Shake with ice and strain into a copper mug filled with ice. Top with with the ginger beer and garnish with a lime peel and a bit of lime zest.

Thanks for reading and cheers!

Wearing a Suit Without a Tie - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Suits and ties are like peanut butter and jelly – meant to be together. But that doesn’t mean a suit can’t be dressed down. Sometimes you want to wear a suit without all the pomp and circumstance, you know? Here are a few tips for wearing a suit without a tie.

Wearing a Suit Without a Tie - He Spoke Style

If you’re going to dress down your suit, it’s really all about the shirt. Choose one in a fabric with a more casual vibe, like denim or chambray.

Don’t overlook the collar. A shirt with a button-down collar will appear more casual and will also help to keep your collar standing up and in place. This is a good way to go if you’re wearing a more traditional dress shirt.

Wearing a Suit Without a Tie - He Spoke Style

| WEARING | QG Custom suit, Uniqlo shirt, Watch c/o Uniform Wares, Belt and shoes c/o Allen Edmonds | PHOTOGRAPHY | by Rob McIver Photo

To play up the casual nature of a suit without a tie, I always like to keep the top two buttons – not just the top button – unbuttoned. This does two things.

First, unbuttoning the extra button just feels more relaxed. Doing just the top button always feels like being stuck in the middle. Either do it up and add a tie or unbutton it and get comfortable.

Second, it compliments and accentuates the v-shape of the suit jacket’s lapels when it’s buttoned. Visually, this creates a nice line and really helps to frame your face.

Blue Suit with a Denim Shirt - He Spoke Style

Pick a pocket square with a pattern and/or contrasting edge. A dressed down suit isn’t the place for a crisp white pocket square. Save that for the office. Have a little fun and make sure it complements your outfit rather than matching exactly.

Fall Boot Guide

Best Fall Boots 2015 Guide - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Fall ushers in a whole new category of footwear: boots. A strong boot game includes both dressy and rugged options. The best thing about any pair of boots is that, with few exceptions, they’re versatile enough to enhance any outfit, no matter the situation. Here, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite fall boot styles.

1. Chelsea Boots

Best Fall Boots for Men Brown Leather Chelsea Boot - He Spoke Style

Jack Erwin Chelsea Boots

Chelsea boots are among the most versatile boot options out there. They’re also some of the most comfortable. So much so, in fact, that I like to call them the loafers of the boot world.

The simple construction with an elastic ankle strip makes them easy to slip on (and off). Wear them with jeans, chinos, trousers, or a suit.

2. Cap Toe Lace-Ups

Best Fall Boots for Men Brown Leather Cap Toe Lace Up - He Spoke Style

Tawny Goods Toe Cap Boot

You can never go wrong with a classic pair of cap toe lace-up boots. In fact, if you’re in the market for your first pair of dress boots, I’d highly recommend a pair of cap toes be your first choice. Keep them simple and in a neutral color and you’ll be able to style them with a suit/nice trousers and a blazer or casually with jeans.

3. Rugged Casual Boots

Best Fall Boots for Men Casual Rugged Timberland - He Spoke Style

Timberland Earthkeepers

For a casual weekend kicking it around the city. For a hike in the hills under the colorful fall foliage. For sitting around a campfire on a chilly night. These are a few things for which you’ll want a good pair of casual boots.

4. Suede Ankle Boots

Best Fall Boots for Men Brown Suede Ankle Boot - He Spoke Style

To Boot New York Suede Ankle Boots

Suede is one of those rich, warm and nicely textured fabrics that’s perfect for fall. These aren’t your everyday boots – especially in the rain – but they can add a luxurious touch to even a casual outfit. If you’re looking to impress on a first date, a pair of suede boots will do the trick.

5. Wingtip Leather Dress Boots

Best Fall Boots for Men Dark Brown Leather Wingtip Dress Boot - He Spoke Style

Allen Edmonds Dalton Wingtip Dress Boots

When you’re talking about dress boots, nothing comes close to the style and elegance of a great pair of wingtip leather dress boots. They add what I’d call “rugged class” to denim and pair perfectly with suits in hearty fabrics like tweed.

For those with an eye for signs of wear: yes, my Daltons are in desperate need of some TLC. I’ve been deliberately putting that off so they’re in tip-top bad shape when we do a video on shoe shines and shoe maintenance.

6. Chukkas

Best Fall Boots for Men Brown Leather Chukka Boot Clarks Desert Boot - He Spoke Style

Clarks Beeswax Leather Desert Boot

If the Timberlands are one end of the casual spectrum and the AE Daltons are on the other side as dressier, the chukka boot is somewhere right in the middle. There are various gradations of chukka boot and the nicer the leather, the more you can dress them up.

Brace Yourself: A Guide to Wearing Suspenders

How To Wear Suspenders - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

It’s kind of hard to fathom, but believe it or not, the belt is a relatively recent invention. Prior to World War I, the favored method of keeping one’s trousers up was with a pair of suspenders.

Nowadays, suspenders (or braces, as they’re known by the British) are often viewed as a relic from another era and/or emblematic of certain kinds of people or professions – they’re worn by dandies, bankers or iconically by waify punk rockers and hipsters.

However, as we’ve started to shift as a menswear culture towards an appreciation of quality and well-appointed details, suspenders can now be considered just another element in the well-dressed modern gentleman’s sartorial playbook.

Here are some guidelines on how to wear suspenders.

How To Wear Suspenders

How To Wear Suspenders - He Spoke Style

1. Buttons or Clips?

This is a real “line in the sand” issue for me. Suspenders should be fastened with buttons. Period. End of discussion.

2. Don’t Wear Suspenders with a Belt

Suspenders are a method for keeping your pants up. A belt is another method for keeping your pants up. Don’t ever wear suspenders with a belt (or a belt with suspenders?). It’s the same as wearing a tie bar with a waistcoat. Choose one method or the other. Don’t cross the streams.

3. Are Belt Loops Okay?

Here’s a topic that could incite a lively debate: wearing suspenders (even fastened with buttons) on pants that also have belt loops.

Hardliners will tell you that if you’re wearing suspenders on a pair of pants with belt loops that you’re not all-in. I can respect that.

However, it’s nice to have options. Especially if you’re going to be spending some hard-earned dollars on a Made to Measure suit. Maybe you’d like to style the suit with a belt sometimes, but also reserve the right to wear suspenders when the mood strikes.

How To Wear Suspenders - He Spoke Style

My opinion is this: there’s nothing wrong with wearing suspenders on pants with belt loops.

Having said that, it does look cleaner, more sophisticated and more committed if you forego the belt loops for side tabs. I get all my pants now sans-belt loops. Side tabs only.

4. Proper Adjustment

Suspenders used to come in different sizes/lengths. Now they have adjusters. When dialing in the right length, there’s a balance point between being too loose and too tight – the latter can lead to an uncomfortable tightening of the pants between the buttocks. Ahem.

My advice here is to go by feel. You’ll know when you’ve got them set up properly. Trust me.

5. Mind the Waist Size

Suspenders are best on pants that have a little room in the waist. If your pants are tight – or perfectly fitted to your waist – you don’t need suspenders. Unless, of course, you’re looking to add an unnecessary fashion accessory to your look.

6. A Subtle Accessory

How To Wear Suspenders - He Spoke Style

| WEARING | Knot Standard suit, Suitsupply shirt, Brooks Brothers suspenders, Drake’s tie | PHOTOGRAPHY | by Rob McIver Photo

A pair of suspenders is not an accessory that’s meant to be flaunted. Back in the olden days, they were considered a form of underwear – a not-quite unmentionable that wasn’t particularly meant to be seen.

Fans of rubber chicken cuff links may disagree with me here, but when you’re talking about classic elegance, subtlety rules the day (or night).

7. Formalwear

Bookending this post with another “line in the sand” item. When it comes to formalwear, suspenders are de rigueur. A belt with formal attire is a non-starter.

Dating Tips for Men First Date Shoes - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Hello, everyone! Today we’re introducing a new column, HUMOR ME, written by Sarah Solomon. Sarah’s going to be offering advice and sharing observations on men’s style from a female perspective – all tailored with her irreverent brand of wit with a chaser of sarcasm.

Fashion and style don’t always have to be so freaking serious. So let’s lighten up. Please give her a warm welcome! – HSS

If a guy has good taste in shoes then he likely won’t screw up in other areas

Hi, guys. I’m Sarah, a humor and fashion writer who will be burdening you with my thoughts on menswear from time to time. Shall we?

When you’re heading out on a first date (or a second or third – I actually don’t know what those feel like) you want to look as good as you feel because confidence is everything.

Your outfit is indisputably a huge part of that crucial first impression, but clothing can be deceiving. That’s why it’s so much easier to judge by shoes.

I’ve broken down my thoughts on what different styles of shoes say about you because no matter what my ex says, I’m a giver.

What different styles of shoes say about you

1. Boat Shoes

Boat shoes are great because unless you’re physically on a boat when you meet her, you’re pretty open about living a lie. And the foundation of every relationship is brutal, unbridled honesty — so at least you’re truthful about appropriating a lifestyle that isn’t feasible at the moment because reality is a cruel mistress. Plus, they’re effortlessly refined and go with nearly everything.

2. Canvas Shoes

In the warmer months, breathable, streamlined canvas shoes can be great. Unless you’re rocking Chuck Taylor’s and a concert tee because it’s time to give up the dream.

Also, I’m wary of TOMS because you assume the person wearing them is into philanthropy and that all is well and good until you learn that ‘Charity’ is actually his favorite stripper’s name. That was a fun seven months I’ll never get back…

3. Sneakers

Barring Sneakerheads with cool kicks or something akin to retro New Balances, leave sneakers to the Palo Alto tech crowd. It shows how apathetic you truly are when meeting her.

4. Oxfords, Brogues & Saddle Shoes

The official shoe of finance bros who came straight from the office, still in their suit. I commend you for showing up after a long day of making the economy work because someone has to!

They’re respectable but not thrilling, kind of like a boozy brunch without someone leaving the restaurant in tears and your waking up from the post-game nap with someone else’s purse puppy in your tote.

5. Loafers & Driving Moccasins

Loafers and driving mocs aren’t reserved for that study full of leather-bound books you’ve never opened or the Country Club happy hour. They’re comfortable, classic, extremely versatile and make you look like you have your shit together. And the first few dates are all about deception, so why not pretend like you know what you’re doing?

6. Cowboy Boots

Unless you’re auditioning to be part of Magic Mike III: This Isn’t My First Rodeo, leave the Western kicks at home. Aside from all the wonderful ‘riding’ euphemisms you could be making, most of the general population won’t appreciate your blacked-out purchase from SXSW.

7. Dress Boots

In fall or winter dress boots are a great option for making a lasting impression. They’re trendy, always appropriate and speak highly of the individual wearing them. Which means you’re probably already married with a wife and kids in Connecticut and a crash pad in the Village – so I don’t trust you.

8. Sandals

Did you just get back from a Dave Matthews Band or OAR concert? Are you tightening your grip on your fleeting youth, crushing the red solo cup in your hand until the rum and coke spills through your fingers like sand through an hourglass?

Unless you’re taking her to a communal shower (creepy) or your newly renovated yet tastefully decorated beach house (call me!), don’t break out the college-era Rainbows.

Desert Boot History and Definition - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

A global footwear icon, the desert boot is the quintessential “dress casual” (or “sharp casual“) shoe. Here’s a short historical primer as well as some desert boot style tips.

Desert Boot History and Definition - He Spoke Style

Desert Boot History

The story of the desert boot begins with the story of Nathan Clark. In 1941 while stationed in Burma as a member of the British Army, Clark noticed some of the officers in his outfit wearing some interesting and comfortable-looking ankle boots during off-duty hours.

He discovered that those boots came from Cairo’s Khan elKhalili bazaar and had been commissioned by British Eighth Army officers as a replacement for their issued boots, since they couldn’t hold up to the harsh desert conditions. These boots were based on the South African veldskoen.

The story of the desert boot begins with the story of Nathan Clark

Inspired by the design, Clark created prototypes out of newsprint and sent them back to England, convinced they would augment the offerings of his family’s shoe business.

Upon returning to England, Clark began to experiment with materials for his new boot design. He settled on suede for the upper – most men’s shoes of the day were made of stiff leather – and used crepe rubber for the sole.

Clark unveiled his desert boot at the 1949 Chicago Shoe Fair. The simple silhouette and unusual crepe sole captivated style editors, who wrote rave reviews of the new design. Since then, the Clarks desert boot has gone on to become a true global footwear icon.

Desert Boot V. Chukka Boot

What’s the difference between desert boots and chukka boots? Two things. First, a desert boot has a suede upper. And second, a desert boot has a crepe sole. Now, Clarks has a few leather desert boot options, but when you define a category of footwear, you can make the rules.

Desert Boot Style Advice

HSS Style Advice: Aside from being a global icon, the original Clarks desert boot is stylish and extremely affordable. Chose one in a light, neutral suede as I’ve styled here, or a classic brown leather. Either one can be easily dressed up or dressed down.

Desert boots pair effortlessly with denim. It’s almost like they were made for each other. With a well-worn pair of jeans, they’re your casual go-to. And styled with slim dark denim and a blazer, they’re dressed up enough for a casual Friday at the office.

Desert Boot History and Definition - He Spoke Style

For a slightly different look, wear them with a pair of neutral corduroys. For fall, I like dark brown or slate gray. It’s a somewhat dressier take than pairing with denim, but keeps some of that “rugged elegance.” Plus, suede and corduroy – don’t forget that fall texture!

what-to-wear-on-a-first-date-in-fall

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

It’s true what they say: you only get one chance to make a first impression. And following our humorous look at first date footwear last week, I thought it would be helpful to share a few outfit ideas focusing on what to wear on a first date this fall.

Here’s some inspiration and a few tips.

what-to-wear-on-a-first-date-in-fall

Play to your strengths. Double down on colors that work with your complexion. These are the colors that will make you look your best and colors that you’ll likely feel most comfortable in. For me, that’s brown, which also happens to be a great fall hue.

Add interest with patterns and texture. If you choose a monochromatic palate as a foundation, use patterns and texture for a little depth. Plaids and fair isle patterns are perfect seasonal options, while a nice pair of corduroys are a good middle-ground when jeans seem too dressed down or trousers too dressed up.

Add some subtle contrast. Pink isn’t necessarily thought of as a fall color, however, when you’re using brown as foundation for an outfit, pink is a nice way to add an accent. It complements brown in a fresh and unexpected way and is sure to attract all the right kinds of attention.

Layer it up. As you know, fall is prime time for layering. A coat seems more like an evening garment and less appropriate for a brunch date. Not to mention that it could wrinkle your blazer. Instead, layer a thin v-neck sweater to stay warm.

As mentioned, dress boots are always appropriate and are sure to make a lasting impression. My favorites: dark chocolate brown Allen Edmonds Daltons.

How Many Jeans Should a Man Own?

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Putting aside, for a moment, possessing multiple pairs of the same jeans, let’s answer the question of “how many jeans should a man own?” in terms of color. And that answer is simple: four!

Here are the four pairs of jeans every guy should have in his wardrobe.

1. Slim & Dark

How Many Jeans Should a Man Own - He Spoke Style

J.Crew 484 in Riverton wash

This is your workhorse pair of jeans and one of the most versatile in your entire wardrobe. When you’re thinking of “dressing up denim,” this it the pair to reach for. Wear with a blazer for work or a first date, or with a simple white button up and a great pair of shoes for a classic sharp look.

2. Worn In

How Many Jeans Should a Man Own - He Spoke Style

A.P.C. New Standard

A pair of worn in denim should be a staple in every guy’s wardrobe. These are your casual pair for lounging around the house, working outside, running errands, and for the weekend.

Though you can buy “brand new” distressed jeans, the best ones are the pair you’ve worn in yourself. They feel like yours, have a signature look, and come complete with a sense of history and pride.

3. Black

How Many Jeans Should a Man Own - He Spoke Style

7 For All Mankind Slimmy

Black jeans are certainly known for their badass casual connotations. What rock and roll kid doesn’t own at least five pairs? And while there’s no denying they look great with a t-shirt and leather jacket, for me, they really shine as an in-between dress pant.

4. White

How Many Jeans Should a Man Own - He Spoke Style

J.Crew 484 Selvedge in White Rinse

White denim is something not every guy is going to feel like he can pull off. And, truthfully, they might not actually be for everyone. However, for the true style-enthusiast – especially one with a penchant for Italian style – they are de rigueur.

Contrary to popular belief, white denim is not just for summer. And, yes, it can be worn after Labor Day. In fact, breaking out the white denim in fall or winter is a sound sartorial move that looks fresh and is always in style.

Davidoff Cigars - Robert Seise Interview - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Stepping into Davidoff of Geneva on Madison Avenue, you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a luxurious oasis of relaxation amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City. You’re surrounded by many of the finer things in life – S.T. Dupont lighters and pens, intricately lacquered humidors, and of course, a well-curated selection of some of the world’s finest premium cigars.

I can’t recall why exactly I started to fixate on Davidoff when I was just getting into cigars about two years ago, but the brand possessed an undisputed aura of quality, timelessness and integrity that exercised a strong gravitational pull on me.

Davidoff of Geneva Madison Avenue New York City - He Spoke Style

So when I’d pull into Penn Station and hop on the E bound for Queens, I started to make regular stops at 5th Ave/53rd St because just a quick right turn towards Madison, there’s Davidoff of Geneva. And once there, as a fledgling cigar smoker, I’d ask tons of questions and pick the brains of the staff. One individual, in particular, became my go-to resource and my cigar “guy.” And that guy was Robert Seise.

With over 20 years in the business – all of those at Davidoff’s Madison Avenue store, mind you – Robert’s entrée into the world of cigars was pure happenstance. Looking for a career change in 1995, an opportunity with Davidoff materialized and the rest, as they say, is history.

A sharply dressed man, who professes to be “not much of a brand guy,” Robert’s knowledge of premium cigars is second to none. He single-handedly helped guide me from being a completely uneducated cigar consumer, to someone who has developed a much more refined and adventuresome palate.

It’s that social aspect of meeting great people from all over the world and sharing his knowledge of cigars that Robert considers to be one of the best parts about working at Davidoff.

Robert Seise of Davidoff of Geneva Madison Avenue - He Spoke Style

Robert’s 5 Tips for Beginning cigar Smokers

1. Be open minded. One of the best things about cigars is the wide variety available. If you’re just staring out, be open to suggestions. It will take some time to dial in your preferences but eventually you’ll start to know what you prefer to smoke.

2. Try many different origins and sizes. This follows very closely to the first point. Tobaccos from different places have different characteristics. Similarly, different sizes can reveal a different flavor profile. As your palate develops, you’ll learn to appreciate many different strengths and flavors.

Don’t miss our Cigar Essentials Guide.

A seasoned cigar smoker will choose a tobacco based on many things, including time of day, what he or she just ate and even mood. While different lengths can have some effect on flavor, length is a consideration mostly based on the time one has to smoke.

Davidoff of Geneva Madison Avenue - He Spoke Style

3. Ask questions. A walk-in cigar humidor like the one we have at Davidoff can be overwhelming to a beginning smoker. Luckily, cigar aficionados tend to be a very polite and knowledgable bunch. Ask what they’d recommend for you and what they think. Guys love to share this stuff.

4. Complement your cigar with your favorite drink. It’s just like pairing food and wine. They can go great together, or one can really overpower the other. Choose wisely! Me, personally, I love rum with my cigars.

5. Relax. And enjoy! As you say, a cigar is a commitment to relaxation. It’s something to be savored, explored and enjoyed slowly. And in good company!

Davidoff of Geneva Madison Avenue New York City Humidor - He Spoke Style

You’ve got to imagine that anyone who’s been in the cigar business for over 20 years has gotten to sample an extremely wide variety of smokes. Robert’s favorite cigar? The mild and creamy Davidoff 5000.

And his most memorable? A Sancho Panza panatela Cuban for its chocolate notes and smoothness, which unfortunately for us, was discontinued in the 1970s.

Chime in with your favorite and most memorable smokes in the comments!

Best Whiskies Under $30 - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

For someone just getting into whiskey of any kind, it can be a daunting and challenging task to pick a sure-fire winner from the hundred or so bottles lining the shelves. Anyone who’s been into a liquor store recently can attest to the fact that whiskey offerings have absolutely exploded in recent years.

Many of the newer boutique brands with fancy labels and cool-looking bottles are very expensive. But price is not always the best indicator of quality. And the good news is that you don’t have to pay a lot of money for a great bottle.

Here are five picks – all under $30 – you can’t go wrong with.

The 5 Best Whiskey Buys Under $30

1. Bulleit Rye

Bulleit sets the standard for rye whiskey. It leans more towards the fruity side, but has subtle pepper and spice notes in the background. A slightly oily body with a medium finish. I always suggest Bulleit Rye to anyone looking to get into rye whiskey.

Price: $25

2. Buffalo Trace Bourbon

An absolute steal. The Buffalo Trace Distillery consistently pumps out some of the most desirable whiskies on earth. And this bourbon is one of their flagship offerings. Smooth and sweet with great balance, Buffalo Trace is an extremely versatile sipper – a highly characteristic bourbon that never disappoints.

Price: $25

3. Old Grand Dad 114

If you’re in the mood for a high-proof bourbon but don’t want to pay barrel proof prices, this is the one you want. With a high rye mash bill Old Grand Dad 114 has many layers of flavor that you could easily pay twice the price for. On the palate, you’ll get leather, oak, pepper, vanilla and citrus notes. I recommend letting this one sit for a day after opening, and to do it justice by sipping it neat.

Price: $28

4. Ridgemont Reserve 1792

A high-rye bourbon that starts out sweet with fig and nougat but then develops mid-palate into so much more. Minty spice and citrus fruit notes lead into a rye and sweet popcorn finish. It comes in a gorgeous bottle that also makes it a great whiskey to give as a gift.

Price: $27

5. Elmer T. Lee

A single barrel bourbon with a nice sweet start that transitions into a cinnamon spicy treat. Finishes with a balanced ratio of pepper to sweet, with charred oak that lingers for a long finish.

Elmer T. Lee is, admittedly, a little hard to find. But, it’s definitely worth the hunt. Yes, there are hard to get whiskeys even in this price range. Also, If your local store marks this up a bit due to its scarcity, then pay the extra for it! It’s worth every penny.

Price: $30

Plaid Flannel Shirt for Men - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

The plaid flannel shirt. For those of us who came of age in the early to mid-90s, it holds a special place in our hearts. Emblematic of the “Seattle Scene” and the birth of grunge, it can still be a viable garment now that we’re all 20 years older. The difference is in how you style it.

Here’s a simple casual fall weekend outfit idea for a plaid flannel shirt.

Making a plaid flannel shirt more mature is all in the styling. Back in high school, it was all about the untucked, devil-may-care attitude. But these days, I prefer to keep it clean and more legit. There’s something to be said for dressing your age.

Keep it tucked in a nice pair of jeans and finish the look off with a “grown up” jacket and pair of shades. You’ll be all set for a casual weekend coffee date or just looking a little more put together than the rest of the guys at the bar watching football.

Men's Brown 3-Piece Suit - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Yes, the title of this post is a play on ALL business. Because in a business world where navy and charcoal grey suits tend to rule the day, a brown suit really is menswear’s seasonal unsung hero.

Depending on where you work, a suit can be something of (or nothing more than) a uniform. And in a strict corporate environment, standing out isn’t always the best way to play the game.

However, for the sartorially-inclined and style-minded company man, a brown three-piece suit can help you stand out and fit in at the same time.

Mens Brown 3-Piece Suit - He Spoke Style

One of the best parts of a brown suit is that, like navy and grey, it’s a very neutral color. This means that it pairs well with just about anything. Of course, you can never go wrong with a classic menswear color combo like navy and brown. More adventurous guys might want to try a pink shirt to flex some sartorial muscle.

Though I always try to include a waistcoat with every suit I purchase, I very rarely wear all three pieces together. Even though I love the look, it can appear overly formal in some situations.

A brown suit, however, tones down that formality somewhat. It has to do with the earthiness of the color and is more approachable, in my opinion, as a full-on three-piece ensemble.

Mens Brown 3-Piece Suit - He Spoke Style

Classic styling always calls for classic footwear and details. The Allen Edmonds Strand is a no-brainer for any business look. Ditto for a sharp leather briefcase.

Best Smelling Cologne for Men Fall 2015 - He Spoke Style

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

As I’ve said many times before, cologne is the final detail to add to any outfit before stepping out of the house. Cologne should complement your personal style as well as the season. That’s why it’s important to switch up your fragrance as the season dictates.

Here are five of my favorite colognes for fall.

1. Frédéric Malle Bigarade Concentree

One of my all-time favorites for fall and one that fulfilled my search for a classic Eau de Cologne after returning from quick trip to Italy two years ago. It has a great bitter orange scent complemented by a woody base of hay and cedar. This one can easily be worn day or night. Shop here

2. Le Labo Santal 33

Inspired by the classic image of the Marlboro man – a man every guy wanted to be and every woman just plain wantedLe Labo’s Santal 33 isn’t a deep and “meaty” sandalwood scent. It’s lighter, though still complex, with slight notes of cardamom, violet, spice, musk and leather. I suggest wearing it in the daytime. Shop here

3. Byredo Mister Marvelous

If Byredo’s Oud Immortel is a great scent for transitioning from summer to fall, then Mister Marvelous is a good handoff once we’ve arrived at autumn proper. An Eau de Cologne-ish scent with mandarin leaves, black amber and white cedarwood. Shop here

4. Diptyque Volutes

Diptyque can do no wrong. You already know I’m a fan of their fig-laced Philosykos for spring and Volutes hits some great notes for fall. Tobacco, spice, amber, leather and musk. This is a great evening scent. Shop here

5. Nasomatto Black Afgano

Longtime HSS readers will remember me mentioning this one a few times. It was introduced to me by my friend Giampaolo Alliata in Milan last fall. (Coincidentally, I’ll be seeing him again next month! Wonder if he’ll have any new recommendations…) Exotic, sexy and rich. The only way to describe it. A decidedly evening scent meant to be worn in deep autumn and through the winter. Shop here

Black chelsea boots are your more dressed-up alternative to brown chelseas. If your office indulges in Casual Fridays, that’s a great opportunity to break these out. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to dressing for work. That’s why it’s important to think seasonally when it comes to footwear. Swap out your usual shoes for a light suede desert boot to make a subtly stylish seasonal statement at the office.

Creative Cocktail Attire: Houndstooth Blazer

Though there’s about a month or so until Holiday party season kicks off, it’s not too early for some inspiration. Here, we’re focusing on getting a little creative with cocktail attire. The centerpiece: a houndstooth blazer.

Mens Houndstooth Blazer Cocktail Attire - He Spoke Style

What is cocktail attire exactly? Its precise definition is a little like “black tie creative,” which is to say, open to interpretation. But in general, cocktail attire means less formal than formal, but not too casual.

For men, that means a dark suit – grey is preferred over navy – or dark pants with a crisp white shirt and sport coat or blazer. A tie is always a sound choice and you may opt for a bow tie for an evening event at a nice venue. For less formal events, a tie is not necessary.

When it comes to creative cocktail attire, a blazer is the garment you can use to stand out. And for fall/winter, there’s nothing like one with a nice houndstooth pattern. Houndstooth checks one of my favorite style boxes, which is that it reveals more upon closer inspection.

Cocktail attire is also a great time to add personal embellishments of the sort you might not wear day-to-day. Of course, a pocket square is de rigueur, but a lapel pin is sure to garner some positive attention.

Mens Houndstooth Blazer Cocktail Attire - He Spoke Style

If you’ve ever been entranced with velvet slippers but wondered when you’d actually wear them, this is your chance. They’re also a way to showcase some personality. An embossed velvet pair is a subtle way to make a statement.

As you know, I like incorporating a bit of Italian flair into my personal style. And over the past three months, as we’ve partnered with Luisaviaroma, it’s been great to showcase some Italian brands I’ve discovered as a result of that relationship.
