Cigar 101: How To Choose a Cigar

5 questions to ask yourself for choosing the perfect cigar

Whether you’re a beginning cigar smoker or a veteran, you always want to choose a cigar that’s going to be perfect for the place, time, company and occasion.

Here’s the HSS guide on how to choose a cigar.

How much time do you have?

This is the very first question to ask yourself any time before lighting up a cigar. Do you have 30 minutes to smoke? An hour? Two hours? Answering this question will allow you to make the right choice when it comes to the cigar’s size.

If the answer is 30 minutes, then choose a corona, petit corona, or something smaller like a Davidoff Primero. Around an hour? Robusto all the way. If you’ve got more than an hour, a toro or churchill will do the trick.

THE PERFECT CUT: How To Cut a Cigar

N.B. In addition to the cigar’s size, also pay attention to how densely it is rolled. A smaller sized cigar, when packed tightly, can last much longer than its size lets on.

how to choose cigar beginners

What are you in the mood for?

If you’re a beginning cigar smoker, you might not know the answer to this question as it’s likely you haven’t sampled a wide variety of tobaccos. The more seasoned cigar smoker will know exactly what kind of experience he’s looking for.

Something spicy? Something mild? Something earthy with notes of cocoa nibs, marzipan, hay and cedar?

LIGHT UP: How To Properly Light a Cigar

The answer here is often dependent on the next question…

What time of day is it?

Just like we crave different kinds of foods at different times of the day, it’s the same for cigars. For a late-morning or afternoon smoke, stick with something on the milder side. Late-afternoon and evening, choose a cigar that’s more full-flavored or spicy.

Did you just eat?

Speaking of food, you should never smoke a cigar on an empty stomach. Many a beginning cigar smoker has fallen victim to this and gotten that awful nicotine sickness in the stomach. We’ve all been there. So, first, make sure you eat a nice meal.

Based on what you’ve just eaten, choose a cigar that will complement that dish. A spicy stick would be great after something rich and savory. A milder smoke would pair better after a spicy meal. And actually, one of my favorite pairings is the milder afternoon cigar with a nice espresso or cup of coffee.

how to choose cigar beginners

What’s the occasion?

Answering this question will help you choose a cigar in terms of price. Of course, you can always spend as much or as little on a cigar as you want, but if it’s for a regular day you might want to keep it within a reasonable budget that you’ve defined.

But for a special occasion, that’s the time to spring for the nice Padron, limited edition Davidoff or Cohiba Behike you scored overseas.

An easy way to add some seasonally-adjusted summer fun to your style

One of the best trends to emerge from Pitti this year was the printed shirt. This was music to our ears here at HSS as we’ve been embracing the style for years now.

Summer should be about having a little fun with your personal style, which is why now is the perfect time to work a printed shirt into your wardrobe.

To help you out, here are five ways to wear a printed shirt this summer.

1. Summer Separates

ways to wear printed shirt

A printed shirt easily transforms an outfit into something that’s more summer-ready (especially one with a palm print). Let it be the statement item against your summer staple linen blazer and pants.

2. Dressed Down Suit

ways to wear printed shirt

Make your cotton suit a little more casual. And consider continuing the casual vibes with your footwear. A crisp pair of white leather sneakers. It’s not a sin.

3. Vacation Vibes

ways to wear printed shirt

Nothing more natural together than a printed shirt and shorts. Great for vacations or whenever you feel like you need one. Live dangerously with a pair of white shorts with the perfect inseam.

4. Urban Tropical

ways to wear printed shirt

Remember that summertime is the best time to have a little fun with your style. A printed shirt checks one of those boxes and burgundy chinos check another. Top it off with a small-brimmed straw hat for some urban tropical vibes.

5. Pool Day

Patterned swim trunks? Basic t-shirt. Solid swim trunks? Pull in some pattern up top.

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Knowing how to use a shaving brush is a key element to getting the perfect shave

Shaving is a ritual. And like all rituals, it takes time. But, man is it worth it.

One of the key elements to getting the perfect shave is knowing how to use a shaving brush.

THE RIGHT BRUSH: The HSS Guide to Choosing a Shaving Brush

Why should you use a shaving brush? Plenty of reasons. It softens your skin, raises your whiskers, provides an extremely lubricated surface for your razor and produces some amazing lather.

Here’s our guide on how to use a shaving brush properly.

Wet the brush. Start by running the brush under some warm water to saturate the bristles. This will prime it to accept the shaving cream or soap. Shake of any excess water.

how to use shaving brush

Add shaving cream or soap. Put a small amount of cream onto the middle of the bristles. Or run the bristles over the shaving cream or soap if you have it in a tin, bowl or cup. If you’re dealing with a quality cream or soap, you actually don’t need to use much to create an amazing lather.

how to use shaving brush

Work into a lather. Using circular motions, work the brush around your beard area. If you’re not getting the desired amount of lather, simply add a bit more water to the brush. Take your time here and enjoy the scent of your shaving cream or soap.. This is one of the most fun and relaxing parts of the shaving ritual.

Shave. If you’ve made the choice to use a shaving brush, you’ve likely gone all-in with the commitment to the complete shaving ritual. And, as such, you’re probably using a safety razor. If you’re just getting started with one, be sure to check out our safety razor shaving tips.

how to use shaving brush

Rinse the brush. After you’re done shaving, run your shaving brush under some cold water. Use your fingers to separate the bristles to get all of the soap out of the hair. Squeeze the excess water from the brush and set it back in its stand.

Stay tuned for our guide to shaving brush care!

polo shirt history

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

The polo shirt was actually invented by a tennis player. No, really.

The polo shirt is a piece of menswear you’d think would have a pretty straight-forward history and origin story. It’s in the name, right? A ‘polo’ shirt clearly was developed as a uniform for polo players! But that’s where you’d be wrong.

As a matter of fact, polo shirts were first used in the sport of tennis, making the common name a misnomer. Back in the day, the tennis uniform, or tennis ‘whites,’ consisted of a long sleeve, white dress shirt worn with the sleeves rolled up.

This was paired with dress trousers and usually a tie. The final result was not very comfortable or conducive to running and swinging a tennis racket. But in those days, fashion won over functionality and everyone called it a day.

Except for tennis star Jean René Lacoste.

polo shirt history

Tired of the impracticality of tennis whites, he developed the very first ‘polo’ shirt. Instead of a stiffer woven fabric, he favored a knit pique that stretched and moved with the player, with an extended back tail to stay tucked in.

Instead of a button-down collar and full placket, he opted for an unstarched ribbed collar that could be flipped up to protect the neck from the sun, and just a half placket shirt.

Lastly, he ditched the long sleeves for short, cuffed sleeves that allowed a full range of movement.

Lacoste wore his new design to win the 1926 US Open and the design caught on like wildfire. Noting the popularity, he took a business leap and launched ‘The Lacoste Shirt Company,’ adding the now-famous crocodile logo in 1927. The Lacoste tennis shirt remains the gold standard for the polo shirt style to this day.

But wait, tennis shirt? What happened to ‘polo’ shirt?

polo shirt history

As functional attire caught on in the tennis world, other sportsmen took note and began to abandon their own stuffier duds for more sensible designs.

At the time, polo players were among those still rocking a less-than-convenient button-up shirt. If you’ll recall from our history of the button-down collar, they had started a move towards functionality by buttoning down their collars, but the rest of the ensemble was still pretty restrictive.

So when the ‘tennis’ shirt took off, polo players caught on quick. And for some reason, the term ‘polo shirt’ just stuck more than ‘tennis shirt.’ Before long even tennis players were calling it by that name.

Golfers also picked up the style in the mid 1900s, again loving the shirt for it’s functionality and adopting it as the standard uniform, but the ‘polo’ naming stuck.

Today, like so many other menswear pieces, the polo shirt has moved past it’s athletic origins and has been adapted to everyday use.

polo shirt history

Pique polos skew more casual, although they’re often a go-to for the less sartorially-inclined biz-caz crowd. Versions in merino wool or other finer knits offer a more elevated and luxe look.

Either way, you can pair one with chino shorts or jeans for a dressed down look, or throw one on under a blazer or even a suit for a bit more formal of an edge – but all the while attaching a sporty je ne sais quoi.

Dress like a normal human being

A quick glance through the Style Guide reveals that my summer style isn’t that different than the rest of the year. Lots of neutrals – blues and browns, especially – lots of easy sharp casual looks and lots of seasonally appropriate fabrics.

Fresh off of NYFWM, here’s one of the deep summer looks I wore last week.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to never dress for others. Only dress for yourself. I saw more than a few dudes trying a little too hard last week.

Classic and no-nonsense dressing won’t get you into any street style roundups, but there’s something to be said for knowing your personal style and sticking to it.

Stand out with a lack of color – I’m talking about white pants – and a little texture in your blazer.

Keep a blazer and trousers look a little more casual with a denim button-down.

3 Summer Spirits To Drink Now

tequila mezcal cachaca

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

Toasting the dog days of summer with Tequila, Mezcal and Cachaça

I’ve always found it exceedingly interesting how my tastes for certain spirits changes with the seasons. As much as I love a good barrel proof bourbon, you (almost) couldn’t pay me to drink one in the summer heat.

When it’s hot out, when the sun is shining and when it’s so humid it’s hard to tell whether I’m sweating or it’s just the soupy air sticking to my skin, I crave spirits that come from south of the border. (And no, it’s not just because we’re vacationing in Tulum right now.)

Leaving out rum for the moment, here are three spirits that pair great with any hot summer day (at the beach, at the pool, or anywhere really).

Tequila. A perennial favorite that often gets a bad rap by college kids doing one too many shots. Tequila comes in a few forms – silver, anejo and reposado. For me, nothing beats a good silver tequila over a large ice cube to sip on a hot day. Espolon is a great brand at a great price.

TRY THESE TEQUILA COCKTAILS: The Margarita and The Siesta

Mezcal. I’m fond of calling mezcal the scotch of Mexico. It’s got the same smoky flavor characteristic of many scotches, but is not so overpowering. It’s traditionally served straight up with some salt and orange slices on the side, but can also be enjoyed over a large ice cube or in cocktail form.

TRY THESE MEZCAL COCKTAILS: Oaxacan Old Fashioned and Naked and Famous

tequila mezcal cachaca

Cachaça. Cachaça is an interesting spirit made from sugarcane juice. It has typically only been used in tropical drinks – the caipirinha being the most popular – however, with the resurgence in interest in craft spirits, you can now find quite a few brands to choose from. I find it to have a little bit of a grappa flavor.

messenger bag history

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

From horses to the battlefield to bicycles, a history of the messenger bag

The messenger bag is a true golden-oldie of men’s day-to-day luggage. In its simplest form – a one-strap bag slung over the shoulder – the style has been around for so long it’s actually hard to nail down an origin.

Over the years similar bags have been used by utility-men of all kinds who needed easy access to their accoutrements without tying up a hand or two in the process.

Whether you called it a satchel, a sling bag, a carryall, or yet another name, they’ve been donned by dudes from Roman legionnaires to army medics to electronic repairmen. That said, it’s the widespread use by letter carriers, first atop horses and more recently bicycles, from which the ‘messenger’ nomenclature is derived.

messenger bag history

The modern version, as we know it, is relatively universally credited to the De Martini Globe Canvas company. In the 1950s, they started producing a satchel specifically designed for telephone linemen to be able to access their tools while high on a telephone pole. The bags were constructed from cotton canvas and featured a waterproof lining, two closure straps, and a small internal pocket.

As bicycle messenger companies proliferated in the 1980s, they resourcefully adopted the lineman’s bags, with unique coloring signifying a messenger’s affiliation. For extra functionality, reflective strips were added to the design as a safety measure for bikers at night or in inclement weather.

messenger bag history

| BRIAN WEARS | Suitsupply blazer and pants, J.Crew henley and belt, Persol sunglasses, Coach messenger bag, Rolex watch, E. Bannister for HSS pocket square, Loafers c/o Tods | PHOTOGRAPHY | by Rob McIver Photo

Over time, the general public picked up on the trend, with a particular niche found in the student community who find the bags particularly convenient for carrying textbooks (and now laptops).

By now, countless brands have entered the messenger bag marketplace with their own iterations. Design variations abound, from extra pockets to different materials, although it’s interesting to note that the original De Martini version is still produced today, wholly unchanged.

messenger bag history

In terms of modern menswear, the glory of the messenger bag lies in its versatility. It’s not as stiff as a briefcase, and therefore doesn’t feel as antiquated or old-fashioned. Yet, it’s still a classier move than a backpack, and the result is far more grown-up and sophisticated. Swap out the traditional canvas make-up for sleeker leather and an even more luxe look is easily attained.

messenger bag history

Whether you’re a student, a businessman, or just a dude on the go, there’s a lot to love in the now-timeless combination of functionality and fashion.

Cigar 101: How To Smoke a Cigar

how to smoke cigar properly

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

The complete HSS guide on how to smoke a cigar properly

When it comes to smoking a cigar, there’s a lot that needs to happen before you actually get to enjoy your stogie.

First, you’ve got to have the right equipment.

Then you’ve got to choose the perfect cigar.

Next, you’ve got to make sure you’ve cut it properly.

And finally, you have to go through the ritual of lighting it up.

Once you’ve done all of that, then you can actually start smoking your cigar. It may seem like a fairly simply process – inhale smoke into mouth, then exhale smoke out of mouth – but smoking a cigar properly is actually something of an art. And like any art, mastering it takes some practice, experience and will probably involve making more than a few mistakes along the way.

To help make the learning curve a little less steep for the new and beginning cigar smoker, we’ve put together this quick guide on how to smoke a cigar properly.

Ahead are tips as well as do’s and don’ts that will help make your cigar smoking experience more enjoyable, not to mention have you looking like a pro.

how to smoke cigar properly

| WEARING | Suitsupply blazer, Al Bazar shirt, Saks Fifth Avenue pants, Homero Ortega hat, Drake’s pocket square, Rolex watch | PHOTOGRAPHY | by Rob McIver Photo

Puff.

Once you’ve done the three puffs to light your cigar, reduce your puffing frequency to about one per minute. This will keep everything – temperature, burn, enjoyment – on an even keel.

One little trick I use to keep my cigar lit well and cool, is to puff out quickly before I take a pull in. It may just be a little habit or tick, but it’s something I’ve adopted that’s worked quite well for me.

Don’t inhale.

The biggest mistake new cigar smokers make is to inhale the cigar smoke into their lungs. Unless you’ve got an iron stomach or are totally immune to the effects of nicotine, you’re going to end up with a wicked case of nausea.

The proper way to smoke a cigar involves inhaling the smoke into your mouth, and then exhaling. Simple.

Take your time.

Smoking a cigar isn’t a race. And it isn’t about getting a fix. It’s about relaxing. It’s about enjoying the company of friends. It’s about savoring the taste and complexities of the handcrafted item you’re holding between your fingers. Slow down and enjoy that time.

how to smoke cigar properly

Removing the cigar band.

There’s a lot of debate in the cigar community about removing the band on a cigar. Should you do it? And, if you’re going to remove it, when should you remove it? Here’s what we say.

Keep the band on until you’ve smoked the cigar down about two-thirds of the way. At this point, the heat from the cherry will have the effect of loosening up the glue on the band, making it much easier to remove. You want this because it’s extremely easy to damage the cigar wrapper by removing a label with too much effort or force.

Some people think leaving the band on is superficial and only for folks who feel the need to advertise what cigar they’re smoking. That’s a load of bull. Ruin a nice cigar by trying too hard to remove a band and you’ll rethink that mentality.

When to ash the cigar.

Do not constantly ash your cigar. The ash will come off easily with a simple tap of your finger or the cigar on the ashtray when it’s ready.

I favor robustos and toros and usually find that I will have to ash the cigar about three to four times – usually just once per third of the cigar. Churchills and lanceros will obviously be ashed more often.

Just be mindful of how strong the ash is when it gets longer. There’s nothing worse than dropping some ash in your lap. We’ve all been there.

Dealing With Common Cigar Smoking Issues

Poor draw.

A poor draw can be a result of a couple of things. You may not have cut the cigar properly (in other words, enough), so the right amount of air is not getting through. Or, the cigar is rolled more tightly towards the cap.

The latter happens frequently with figurado and torpedo shaped cigars. This can sometimes – notice I don’t say often – be remedied by one of the following three work-arounds.

First, try rolling the tight end of the cigar between your thumb and index finger to loosen up the tobacco. If that doesn’t produce a better draw, poke the cut end of the cigar with a small sharp object, like the point of a pocket knife. Finally, try cutting a little more off with your cutter.

I’d say that two times out of 10 one of those fixes will work. However, in the event they don’t you’ve got two choices: deal with the slow or weak draw or put down the cigar and light up a different one.

Cigar doesn’t stay lit.

A cigar won’t stay lit if you don’t puff on it frequently enough – you’ve got to keep the tobacco burning! – or if it’s rolled poorly. If it’s the former, increase the frequency of your puff. If the latter, well, there’s nothing you can really do about that. You’ve got a dud in your hand.

how to smoke cigar properly

Cigar doesn’t burn evenly.

Even the finest cigars don’t have a razor sharp and even burn all the time. Small burn issues will usually work themselves out, while others take a little intervention to remedy.

One of the best things you can do to help ensure an even burn, is to rotate the cigar every so often between your fingers. What this does is give the entire wrapper the same exposure to the air – perhaps there’s a ceiling fan, air conditioner, or slight breeze – around you. If that doesn’t totally work, blow on the end of the cigar a little to help keep the burn moving along.

Some cigars will start to burn unevenly enough that they’ll need a touch up with your lighter or a match as you smoke. When do you know if it’s time do this? It’s kind of a matter of personal preference.

Personally, I don’t have a very high tolerance for an uneven burn, so I’m a little quicker on the draw – pun intended – when it comes to touching up and correcting an uneven burn. My threshold is about 3/4 to 1 inch of difference before I can’t take it any more.

Some people take the stance of, “if that’s the way it burns, then that’s the way it burns,” and do no touching up whatsoever. These are probably the same guys who keep their bowtie tied however the first try turns out. Hey, nothing wrong with that! It’s just a certain mindset.

In the cigar world, however, letting an uneven burn go too far can result in a phenomenon called “canoeing,” where the burn is so uneven that the cigar looks like a canoe dug out from a log.

Wrapper isn’t burning.

The other burn-related issue is when the wrapper doesn’t burn at all. This is called “tunneling” and is easily fixed by giving the end of the cigar a little more fire with a few quick puffs. Make sure to nip this one in the bud.

Smoke is very hot.

You’re smoking too fast. The hot smoke will also cause the cigar to taste bitter. Hopefully, it hasn’t gotten too far down. If it hasn’t, put the cigar down for a bit, then take your time between puffs. Remember, about one minute or so between puffs is a good barometer for a good cigar smoking rhythm.

An all brown look with a brown cotton suit is not too much of a good thing

I’ve been in sort of a non-color phase so far this summer. No real interest in the ubiquitous “pop of color” either. The good thing is that a lack of color can open up a number of different areas and angles to explore.

One of the easiest, which also happens to be one of my personal favorites, is to work within a particular color family.

Here’s an example of how to do it, featuring a dapper styling of my brown cotton suit.

Brown isn’t a traditional summer color. It’s not bright. It’s not flashy. It doesn’t necessarily project the season. A cotton suit, on the other hand, does. Light and breathable, a dark brown cotton suit is a great addition to your closet if you’ve already got a khaki version in your arsenal.

Just like khaki, darker brown will work with most colors you choose to pair it with. But it also serves as a great base if you plan to work within the world of browns.

Make a dark brown cotton suit the star of the summer by working in lighter shades of brown and tan in your accessories. An off-white Panama hat in place of a traditional white version and a light tan and subtly textured wool/silk tie against a crispy white shirt is all you need.

What color shoes do you wear with a brown suit? How about brown?! Again, keeping with the theme of texture and color variation within the brown spectrum, try a pair of medium brown suede penny loafers.

The HSS Guide for helping you make the smartest and most well-informed vintage rolex purchase possible

Buying a brand-new Rolex can be truly special – as the first owner, you really feel as though the watch is your own. The only history that the watch has is the one that you have yet to make with it!

While this is a great feeling, choosing to purchase a vintage Rolex opens up an entirely different range of excitement and one-of-a-kind possibilities.

Due to a range of variables, it often takes a decent amount of knowledge and attention to detail to confidently purchase any vintage Rolex references.

While there are no end-all rules for how to buy a vintage Rolex, below are some key points to remember as you enter the vintage market.

1. Know the Watch

This is easily the most important part of buying any timepiece. All vintage watches will be pre-owned, and no two will be exactly alike. Before you start looking at watches, it is important to familiarize yourself with the specific reference you intend to purchase. That way, you will be able to spot a correct and genuine example when you see one.

2. Check the Condition of the Dial

The dial is almost everything when it comes to vintage Rolex. Dials cannot really be cleaned or polished, so any damage you see is likely permanent. Even when a dial appears to be in good condition, it is important to verify that it is an original dial, and not one that has been refinished.

3. Look at the Luminous

Most vintage Rolex have radium or tritium-based luminous on their hands and hour markers. Since neither materials is still used by Rolex, their presence is an excellent way to check if a dial or set of hands is original. While radium can be verified by a using a Geiger counter, tritium can often be identified because it will no longer glow, and it will have a brownish patina forming on its surface.

4. Confirm the Reference and Serial Numbers

Many of the watches that Rolex produces share parts with other Rolex from similar years. Due to this compatibility, you may come across vintage Rolex that are actually combinations of parts from different watches. For this reason, it is prudent to verify that the reference number corresponds to the appropriate model – and that the serial number has not been reported as stolen.

There are no hard and fast rules on how to buy a vintage Rolex

5. Examine the Hands

Much like the dial, the hands are important to thoroughly examine because they can often give you a lot of useful information about the watch’s history. Bending or scratching can frequently be indicative of a poorly performed, past repair; and any luminous present on the hands should match the luminous on the dial (patina included).

6. Check the Bezel Insert (if applicable)

The colors and text on the aluminum bezel inserts fitted to many vintage Rolex sport models is merely a coating; no marks or scratches can be removed through cleaning or polishing. Generally speaking, an original bezel insert should look its age, especially if the rest of the watch does.

7. Is the Bracelet Correct for the Watch?

Rolex has a few different bracelet designs, and has made several updates to them over the years. If your watch is listed as having an original bracelet, it is worth verifying that it is the correct generation and configuration that should be found on that watch.

8. Look at the Movement

If possible, try to visually inspect the movement (or at least see a picture of it). Beyond confirming that it is the correct caliber for the watch, examining the movement also gives you the opportunity to check for corrosion or visible damage.

9. Has the Watch Been Over-Polished?

The act of polishing removes a tiny layer of metal from the watch’s surface. Frequent or excessive polishing can deform or diminish functional components of the watch, and in certain cases, compromise its structural integrity.

10. Does the Watch Come with Paperwork/Service Records?

Although most vintage Rolex have long been separated form their original paperwork, any and all documentation pertaining to the watch is useful to prospective buyers. Receipts and warranty cards help with authentication, and service records paint a picture of what has been done to the watch, and when it was last maintained.

I Tried The Clarisonic Alpha Fit for a Month

…and here’s what I thought

While I prefer my shave to be analog, I’m all for embracing technology in other areas of my skincare routine. I’d been curious about the Clarisonic Alpha Fit for a while and finally decided to spring for one to see if it lived up to the hype or was just another gimmick.

I wanted to give myself (and my skin) enough time to live with the device so I could write an informed review based on my personal experience.

Here, I’ll break down what the Clarisonic Alpha Fit does, how it works and share my honest to goodness thoughts about whether it’s worth the investment or not. So if you’ve been debating getting one for yourself, you’ve found the right post.

clarisonic alpha fit review mens

What It Does

The Clarisonic Alpha Fit says it’s designed to clean men’s “thicker, oilier skin.” Personally, this statement alone kept me from buying one sooner.

I don’t have what I suppose they’d consider “man skin” – mine is a little more sensitive and tends to be on the drier side. Don’t let this deter you. I think it’s more of a marketing ploy than a reflection of how the device actually functions.

How It Works

A brush on the end of the base of the device oscillates 300 times per second – yes, you’re reading that right – which helps to loosen dirt and oil, clear your pores and prepare your skin for the perfect shave. Combined with some gentle circular motions and you should have some pretty clean skin.

The Alpha Fit has two different timed settings – one for a shaved face and one for a face with some stubble or a beard. Each setting breaks the face into three separate areas: forehead, face/beard area and neck.

In the smooth face setting, you get 20 seconds for each zone; in the beard face setting, it goes 20 seconds, 40 seconds, 20 seconds.

Thoughts After First Use

It went by too fast. Even though I used the beard setting. Learning to work with the Alpha Fit’s timing system was honestly one of the aspects of the device that I never fully mastered. And I’m a professional musician, so I’ve got a good sense of inner time!

Despite not really getting the hang of the device’s timing – I suppose I could have gone through two cycles – I have to say that my face had never really felt smoother. Additionally, I was told that my skin and pores looked a lot clearer than they have in the past.

Thoughts After Longterm Use

After using the Alpha Fit for about a week, I noticed that I was starting to break out a little more than usual. It’s been a while since I’ve had pimples, but this was bringing it out of me.

This did not last long and I assume it happened because my skin was getting rid of a lot of bad stuff. Not too long after, my skin cleared up again and I did not see any more breakouts.

Do You Need To Use Alpha Cleanse?

Clarisonic sells their own facial cleanser – of course they do – that you’re supposed to pair with the Alpha Fit. Do you have to use it? No.

I did in the beginning simply because it came with the package – it actually does smell really nice – but once it ran out I ended up using my regular facial cleaners, which worked just as well.

clarisonic alpha fit review mens

Overall Impressions & Biggest Benefits

The Clarisonic Alpha Fit is a device that I’ve fully integrated into my daily skincare routine. I really love it. I like the routine. I like how clean it makes my skin feel. I like how easily it combines cleansing and exfoliating into one action. Plus, it’s small and travels well.

However, the biggest personal benefit I saw? Absolutely no ingrown hairs.

This is a big one for me. Prior to using the Alpha Fit, every couple of months or so I’d get an awful ingrown hair. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of having one of those, you know how terrible it can be. And I’d get them despite taking good care of my skin – washing twice a day, exfoliating, moisturizing, all that.

But, I haven’t seen one since I started using the Alpha Fit, and that’s reason enough for me to keep on using it!

Have you used the Clarisonic Alpha Fit?

Chime in with your experiences in the comments!

Look casual yet put together with a polo shirt under a blazer

I think it’s time to reexamine the polo shirt. It’s a classic piece that doesn’t get nearly enough play – at least around these parts. Part of the reason I think I’ve personally not worn them as much is their relative ubiquity.

Let’s face it, the polo shirt is pretty much the de facto summer uniform for the guy who doesn’t like to get dressed up, but has to get dressed up for something. Not that there’s anything wrong with a simple khaki chinos and polo shirt outfit. It’s about as classic as you can get.

One way to take a fresh look at the polo shirt is to think outside the box a little bit. Here’s one way to do it by throwing a blazer on top.

One of the problems with wearing a polo shirt under a blazer is the shirt’s collar. It’s more an extension of the shirt’s fabric than it is an actual “collar.” In other words, it’s not that strong and isn’t going to stand up under a blazer like a regular button-up’s collar. Use it to your advantage.

The unstructured nature of a polo shirt’s collar lends itself to a more easygoing look. Under a blazer, it has the effect of dressing it down, looking more casual and relaxed.

I actually really like this as a summer option. The polo shirt’s short sleeves feel a lot better under a blazer during the summer than a long-sleeved button-up.

One downfall – or actually one thing to simply pay attention to – is that flimsier collars may bunch up under the blazer. Just be aware of that and be sure to take a quick look in the mirror to fix any issues if you take your blazer on and off.

10 things to kick-start your Monday

It’s hard to find non-political news, tweets, images and memes during an election year cycle, but luckily, not impossible.

Cargo shorts gone missing? Your significant other may be secretly throwing them away (and rightfully so). My mom should have done this to my dad years ago…

It’s great that the fashion and grooming industries are becoming more inclusive for men, but male lingerie is a step too far.

The Rio Olympics are officially underway and Simone Biles is the one to watch. Everyone is talking about why her strength is so unmatched.

Not able to eat your food until someone stops taking a photo of it? (Personally, I verbally threaten stabbing them in the hand with my fork.) In the words of Ikea’s new ad: “It’s a meal. Not a competition. Let’s relax.”

You are going to be seeing a lot of slouchier-fitted pants in stores this Fall. Are we the only ones not ready to embrace this trend?

How long do you think it takes someone to take clips from 230 movies and edit them to match up with Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)?

We have a new contributor to the site – everyone welcome Paul Altieri from Bob’s Watches! – and in his first article, he gives 10 tips on what to look for when buying a vintage Rolex.

I myself am a fan of the Donnie Baseball (not the Brian), but here are nine other mustache styles meant to inspire you.

Speaking of grooming, salt spray is said to give your hair better texture. Have any of you tried this?

While you “can” do these deskercises at work, you will absolutely be judged by your colleagues. Especially if I’m one of them.

Another White Pants Look, Because Summer

white chinos outfit idea

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

White chinos may be light on color, but they’re heavy on style

As I sat down to write this post, it struck me that there’s not really much to a classic men’s outfit. If we’re talking business casual or sharp casual – our perennial favorite style of dress – we’re talking a blazer, a button-up shirt, some pants (or jeans) and a nice pair of shoes.

Seems simple enough. Almost boring when you break it down like that. But that’s when the beauty of menswear emerges.

That’s when you start to dig deeper into fabrics. That’s when you start to dig deeper into texture. That’s when you start to dig deeper into patterns, accessories and colors and their almost endless variations.

For some that’s overwhelming. But for the devotee, it’s everything.

white chinos outfit idea

Though I’ve not purposefully shied away from color this summer – I just love a brown suit too much – I haven’t done much with it at all. And, of course, summer is the time for color. Lighter colors.

Here’s an easygoing summer look that’s “light” on color, but heavy on classic style.

white chinos outfit idea

| WEARING | Saks Fifth Avenue blazer, shirt and pants c/o Tommy Hilfiger, IWC watch, Oliver Peoples sunglasses, G.H. Bass loafers | PHOTOGRAPHY | by Rob McIver Photo

How many blue blazers do you need? That’s really a tough question, because once you get into different fabrics and patterns and constructions, you really could have 10 different navy blazers – all for a different occasion or season.

For the summer, however, it’s important to have one in a lighter blue, preferably linen. Like a classic navy blazer in the spring or fall, a light blue linen blazer will be your go-to during the warmer months.

Speaking of color and pattern, don’t forget that when it comes to your shirt. Pattern on a shirt can be a worrisome prospect. However, a small houndstooth (or puppytooth), is a solid choice. From a distance it almost appears solid, but up close you notice the intricate pattern.

We’ve sung the praises of white chinos earlier this summer and there’s no reason to stop now. Summer’s going to be ending soon, get the most out of them!

Cigar 101: How To Hold a Cigar

hold cigar properly

from He Spoke Style - Men's Style, Fashion, Grooming, Tips and Advice

A mildly tongue-in-cheek, but serious, guide on how to hold a cigar properly

There’s a lot to think about when it comes to cigars. Choosing one. Cutting it. Lighting it. And smoking it. The last thing on your mind is how to hold that cigar your smoking.

However, how you hold a cigar, is a key component to the cigar smoking experience. Your choice of grip, like the clothes you choose to wear, projects something about you. So you want to make sure you’re doing it properly.

Here are the HSS-approved methods for holding a cigar.

1. The Respectful Grip

hold cigar properly

Remember that the cigar you are holding in your hand is the result of an extremely long and painstaking process. From seed to stick, literally hundreds of people have had a hand in making that cigar.

Translation? You need to show that cigar some respect!

There is no way to hold a cigar that shows more reverence and respect than what we call “The Respectful Grip.” The cigar is held lightly in the hand between the thumb and multiple fingers. Your grip should only be tight enough to keep the cigar in your hand and roll it back and forth slowly and slightly as you consider its majesty.

For longer cigars, use all four fingers. For short sticks (or when your Churchill starts to burn down) use three and then two fingers. Always use your thumb and at least two fingers.

What it says about you: You’re a cigar veteran. You understand and appreciate the craft of making a premium cigar and, therefore, you transform your hand into a sort of corporal pedestal/display case for that beauty.

2. The Pool Cue

hold cigar properly

Holding a cigar like this is a straight up power move. You’re a boss. No, you’re the boss and you’re not going to get any arguments over that from the likes of Bruce Springsteen or Tony Danza.

What it says about you: You’re confident and have some swagger. You likely prefer toros or anything with a ring gauge larger than 50.

3. The Don’t Ever Hold a Cigar Like This

hold cigar properly

The biggest problem with this grip, other than it looking weak, is that it actually is weak. The cigar is completely unsupported and risks being dropped or ashed prematurely. You know that trick you do with a pencil that makes it look like it’s rubber? That’s what this grip does to a cigar.

What it says about you: You’re a novice. But you won’t be for long, because hopefully someone’s going to tell you to never, ever hold a cigar like that again.

5 Pairs of Loafers To Wear This Summer

A guide to five of the best men’s loafer styles to wear this summer

Summertime means that it’s loafer season. And since we’ve still got several good weeks of warm weather ahead of us, I thought it would be a good time to go over some of our favorite loafer styles.

The loafer is a timeless classic when it comes to men’s footwear. There’s something leisurely but elegant about a great loafer.

Here are five of our favorites for summer.

1. Suede Penny Loafers

best loafers summer mens 2016

The penny loafer is one of the all-time greatest casual classics. They pair well with just about any type of trouser – casual or otherwise – including jeans, chinos, or linen pants.

We like a suede pair instead of leather for summer. Suede adds some texture and softens the overall appearance, making the loafer appear slightly more casual. Though it’s just as easily dressed up for work.

2. Horsebit Loafers

best loafers summer mens 2016

The horsebit loafer is sometimes referred to as the “Gucci loafer.” That’s because in the late 1960s, when Gucci “updated” the popular penny loafer with a metal strip across the front in the shape of a horse tack, the brand’s name became interchangeable with the style.

Today, many brands make horsebit loafers. A rubber sole helps balance out the formality of the horsebit slightly, making them a versatile choice for many different types of occasions. A good pair will last for years. I’ve more than gotten my money out of my favorite Allen Edmonds Grand Caymans.

3. Leather Tassel Loafers

best loafers summer mens 2016

Like many of our favorite loafers, the tassel loafer is known for being durable, timeless and versatile. In leather, they’re on the slightly dressier side of the spectrum, which makes them the perfect choice for any classic summer look.

4. Driving Moccasins

best loafers summer mens 2016

Though they were originally designed for driving, the driving moccasin (or, driving shoe or driver) has evolved to be worn daily as well. Characterized by a flat bottom and grippy rubber stud on the soles, they’re quite possibly the ultimate casual everyday loafer. And the iconic Tod’s Gommino is the archetype.

5. Kiltie Loafers

best loafers summer mens 2016

Kiltie loafers are, honestly, a fun little shoe. They’re a little dressy. They’re a little dandy. They’re a pair of loafers for the guy who is confident in his style. A real “shoe guy’s” kind of shoe.

Despite their quirkiness, the kiltie loafer is surprisingly versatile. Wear them to work when your feet feel a little fancy or spice up a casual shorts and polo look on the weekend.

Showing you how to tackle one of the most oxymoronic dress codes with some summer style

Business casual is one of those dress codes that’s just as perplexing, vexing and open to interpretation as it is oxymoronic.

It’s a topic we haven’t covered comprehensively thus far, but one that we are planning to explore in greater detail next month as we revive our monthly editorial theme.

For now, however, let’s agree that the general requirements for business casual attire, include something that is office-appropriate, but not quite as buttoned-up as a typical business-style look.

So what would summer business casual be? Here’s one example.

modern business casual summer suit

| WEARING | Suitsupply suit, Saks Fifth Avenue shirt, Rolex watch, Briefcase c/o ONA, Persol sunglasses, To Boot New York loafers | PHOTOGRAPHY | by Rob McIver Photo

A cotton suit is typically thought of as a more casual suit option. But that doesn’t mean you can’t wear it to the office. Although a khaki cotton suit appears slightly more sporty, darker colors, like navy or brown, can project more of a “somber” office feel.

The absolute easiest way to transform a business look into a business casual look is to loose the tie. It’s also a good match for the more casual nature of a cotton suit.

If you need to carry a briefcase to work, keep it as simple as your outfit. Our friends from ONA are currently making a superbly stylish option.

As we mentioned on Wednesday, the loafer is one of the all-time greatest casual footwear classics. And for business casual, nothing beats a pair of suede penny loafers.
